DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVES

BECOME A FSPA STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE!

Student representatives are elected annually in the fall from around the state and serve through the following year’s fall workshop. There is one student representative for each FSPA District, and they will serve on a student board along with student chairs that are selected annually by the executive board after the state convention.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain leadership experience. If you are a current Junior p
lease consider running for District Student Representative and contributing your talents and creativity to FSPA.

HOW TO APPLY:

Applicants must be a JUNIOR in high school, complete the online application and submit all required materials listed below.

  • Two letters of recommendation  - These can be from teachers, administrators, coaches, etc.
  • Transcripts or other documentation with proof of required GPA
  • Headshot
  • Signed Permission Slip
  • A short biography
  • A short essay explaining why you want to be a district representative
  • Up-to two minute campaign video describing why you should be the student Rep. (shot on phone, no editing)
These items (other than the transcript) will be included in district workshop programs as well as a sample ballot for review by member publications in preparation for their vote.

REQUIRED DUTIES

  • Theme planning for Spring Convention
  • Designing the logo
  • Assisting Executive Board with overall planning
  • Planning and carrying out banquet decorations
  • Securing “freebies” from vendors
  • Assisting and coordinating with various spring convention activities and events.
  • Work with district directors and FSPA Office Staff to supervise the registration desk, greet speakers, and prepare awards.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Student MUST BE A JUNIOR during the 2023-2024 school year.
  • Student must have at least a 2.75 cumulative grade point average as evidenced by transcripts.
  • The student’s media program MUST be an active member of FSPA.
  • The student and their adviser MUST ATTEND the 2023 Fall district workshop.
  • The student must attend the Winter Executive Board Meeting in Orlando on November 30-December 2, 2023 at the Wyndham Orlando Resort International Drive.
  • The student and their adviser must attend the state convention in Orlando on April 18-20, 2023 at Wyndham Orlando Resort International Drive. The elected student will room with his/her staff members under the guidance and direction of his/her adviser.
  • Student must make travel arrangements to attend these events.

EXPECTATIONS:

  • Student must have time to take on FSPA responsibilities and activities, work independently and work well with adult supervision.
  • Student must be computer literate and creative and must be able to use phone skills.
  • Student must agree to all of the rules/regulations in the FSPA BYLAWS.


RESPONSIBILITIES OF REPRESENTATIVE’S ADVISER

  • Adviser must attend the Fall District Workshop.
  • Adviser must assist the student rep, with the district director, to plan state workshops and fill out the appropriate “excused absence forms.”
  • Adviser must attend the 2024 State Convention in Orlando and stay at the Wyndham Orlando Resort International Drive to chaperone their students and the student rep.


ELECTION PROCEDURES

  • Nominees will attend the district workshop and present an up to 3 minute speech to attendees.
  • Sample ballots will be sent out at least two weeks prior to election day.
  • Voting will not happen online until November 7, 2023.

VOTING

  • Votes for this position are based on a publication vote. Each publication has one vote. This is not a general population vote.
  • Advisers will meet with their staff members, ascertain their choice for student representative and then vote virtually on Nov. 7.  Note, ballots will arrive via email from electionrunner.com

ELECTION RESULTS

  • ​The winner of the election will be announced through through FSPA social media channels and on our website.
  • If a problem develops and the winner cannot serve as the District representative, the runner-up will be notified and will serve as outlined above.
